Map of Anda
The municipality of Anda
is the only island town of Pangasinan. It lies at the western portion of
the Lingayen Gulf. Lying in a body of water, coral reefs extend along its
shores. These provide shelter and abundant food sources for fish and other
aquatic organisms. These also serve as fundamental barriers to protect
shorelines from storms. Wider coral reefs are found along the western coastal
barangays of Macando-candong, Batiarao, Imbo and Cabungan.
China Sea Waters surround the municipality of Anda. On the western side
of the island town just across the Kakiputan channel, is the town of Bolinao.
On the south is the municipality of Alaminos, and Bani on the southwest.
Being an agricultural town, the municipality is producing rice not only
for the town’s consumption but also for commercial purposes. Aside from
rice, Anda supplies more than fifty percent of the fish needs of its neighboring
towns. The market outlet for the rice and fish products of the municipality
is in Alaminos, Pangasinan.
Fishing ranks second to farming as a source of livelihood. Majority of
the municipal fishers engage in shallow water fishing by using various
gears. Their major fishing grounds are the reef areas in the Lingayen Gulf
and some parts of the China Sea. Major commercial fish species caught include
snapper, siganids, crabs, bangus, grouper and shrimps. It is believed that
Anda supplies more than fifty percent of the fisheries products sold in
the nearby town of Alaminos, the commercial center of Western Pangasinan.
The island of Anda is situated in a strategic location within the whole
Lingayen Gulf coastal zone, which particularly forms part of the Bolinao-Anda
reef. As such, it occupies a critical point in the effort towards the maintenance
and protection of coastal and marine resources in the country. The presence
of different ecosystems, both in coastal/marine and inland areas, makes
it an ideal site for the modeling of a small-island sustainable natural
resource management program. In terms of areas where initiatives towards
coastal resource protection and management are being undertaken, the island
lies between two areas where there are existing ones: Bolinao and the Hundred
Islands.
